Somewhere characters are getting sign-extended, meaning that the attributes of the drawing chars (>= 128) are wrong. Cast the value before sending it to VGA. This is libpayload, a minimal library to support standalone payloads that can be booted with firmware like coreboot. It handles the setup code, and provides common C library symbols such as malloc() and printf(). Please see the sample/ directory for an example of the payload in action.
